What Role Does KPK Play Now?

Recommended Posts

Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is now busy looking for the culprit behind the leak of Democratic Party chairman Anas Urbaningrum name as a suspect in an Order of Investigation (Sprindik) to the public.

According to spokesman Johan Budi S.P, the commission is still validating the circulating documents whether they were leaked from internal KPK, outside parties, or even if documents are false. “Even if it’s true, it is not the real Sprindik. It is just a draft,” he said on Monday (2/11).

KPK will soon conduct chiefs meeting and to deliver an official statement. Thus, commission does not want to conclude whether the documents are authentic or not.

Johan said not all KPK employees know Sprindik, but only certain people who know and have knowledge of it, namely the Director of Pre-Investigations, Director of Investigation, Enforcement Deputy, and Chairman of KPK. Therefore, KPK will conduct an investigation to determine whether there are violations of the code of ethics or not of the alleged Sprindik circulation.

However, the Commission signs to look for the mastermind behind the incident raises suspicion that the letter is valid. The long process of determining Anas as a corruption suspect is seen as the Commission indecision to put the Chairman of Democratic Party (PD) as a criminal.

KPK Chairman Abraham Samad previously promised will named Anas as a suspect in near future. He said the designation Anas as a suspect only waiting the investigation warrant signed by all KPK leaders.

Apung Widadi, Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) Political Corruption Division Investigator, said KPK had influenced by current PD rescue agenda when investigating corruption cases. The agenda can be seen from the emergence of Anas’ investigation warrant. “In fact, the investigation is still on process, but unfortunately is leaked. This is detrimental of KPK independence,” he said.

While Chairman of Commission X and also former Chairman of PD Faction in the House, Agus Hermanto asked that all parties don’t interfere KPK.

According to Agus, although there is a leaked over Anas status as suspect, it’s not necessarily true, so all parties should wait for an official decision from KPK.

Anyhow, he supported PD Chairman of Supreme Council Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who asked Anas to focus on dealing with law issues. He did not want to speculate that SBY decision indicated that Anas has named as a suspect by KPK.

Last week, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono finally fulfilled his promise to take part in resolving disputes in PD. To save the party, he issued eight policies which were considered to be the solution for the company’s rearrangement, cleaning, and improvement.

One of the President’s measures is by taking over the control of the party. With such decision, the President has the authority over the party’s policy decisions and actions On that occasion, the President also gave a chance to the PD Chairman Anas to focus on his legal allegation in KPK.

ICW researcher Abdullah Dahlan expected KPK could immediately ascertain the validity of document allegedly the investigation warrant. Thus, KPK will not get carried away to the agenda. “KPK must show to the public if Anas finally named as a suspect not because political interference, but because law and the evidences,” he said.

According to him, KPK must prioritize Hambalang case quickly and precisely and don’t get carried away to PD political agenda in determining Anas status.

Hopefully KPK as a legal institution that aims to stop corruption will not become political tool. Don’t let KPK that is now the only public expectation play in conspiracy in favor of particular political interest. (c40/jao/sep/t05/t08)
