Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an upcoming third-person shooter platform game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5. It is the sixteenth installment in the Ratchet & Clank series. The game will take place after the events of both 2013's Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, the last game in the Future Saga, and 2016's Ratchet & Clank, which served as a re-imagining of the first game in the series.[4] According to the studio, it will also feature a full length stand-alone storyline that will appeal to newcomers of the series.[5][6][7]Rift Apart was presented at the PlayStation 5 reveal event in June 2020. The game will be released on June 11, 2021.

 

Synopsis

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will explore the story of the titular characters as they traverse across different worlds in multiple realities to stop their archenemy, Doctor Nefarious, from exploiting the catastrophic dimensional collapse to finally achieve his dream of completely exterminating organic life in all universes. The cause of the collapse is attributed to a malfunctioning Dimensionator, a wormhole device created by the Lombaxes capable of opening portals to other dimensions. In the process of destroying the Dimensionator, Ratchet gets separated from Clank after arriving in an alternate dimension ruled by Nefarious’s more capable counterpart, Emperor Nefarious. They also encounter a female Lombax named Rivet who is a resistance fighter. Together, Ratchet, Clank and Rivet will have to work together as part of a resistance team to thwart Nefarious and the Emperor's plans of conquering other realities.[8]

Gameplay

The game shares many gameplay similarities with Ratchet & Clank (2016) and other entries in the series. It retains elements of previous Ratchet & Clank games, such as strafing, gunplay, collection of bolts, automatic weapon and health upgrades, manual Raritanium weapon upgrading and gadgets. The main playable character is Ratchet. He is accompanied by his robotic friend and sidekick Clank, who is hung on his back. There will also be a playable female Lombax named Rivet.[3][9] The player navigates Ratchet and Rivet through diverse environments across a multitude of levels, defeating enemies with an array of varied weapons and gadgets, and traversing obstacles to complete key mission objectives.[10]

This will be the first game in the series to introduce the concept of real-time near instantaneous travel between different areas, planets and other worlds within gameplay scenes via a system of inter-dimensional portals.[11] In order for the player to utilize this feature, a new mechanic dubbed the Rift Tether is introduced in Ratchet and Rivet's arsenal that pulls them from one side of the portal to another, facilitating that travel functionality with great ease.[11] The game will feature the return of planets explored in previous entries with a dimensional twist, through their alternate counterparts, alongside new planets not seen previously in the franchise.[12] Correspondingly, the game features enhanced mobility in the core mechanic of the traversal gameplay and platforming experience with the addition of moves such as dashing and wall running.[13] Insomniac Games confirmed through several interviews, that the game’s arsenal would feature a mix of brand new weapons and returning classics from prior installments.[14]

Development

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is being developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 5, and directed by Creative Director Marcus Smith, and Lead Designer, Mike Daly.[15][16] It was revealed at Sony's PlayStation 5 reveal stream on June 11, 2020.[17] At Gamescom's Opening Night Live on August 27, 2020, Insomniac Games showcased an extensive 7-minute gameplay demo for the title as part of the promotional efforts for PlayStation 5.[18] On April 26 2021, Sony announced that it would unveil a sizeable 16-minute gameplay trailer for the game, in its State of Play presentation on April 29, 2021.[19][20]

The game will take advantage of the PlayStation 5's Dualsense controller, Tempest Engine and dedicated ray tracing hardware to support advanced haptic feedback, 3D spatial audio and real-time ray tracing effects.[21][22] With the increased processing power and inclusion of a custom solid-state drive storage in the PlayStation 5, the game will feature a greater variety of NPCs, enemies, visual effects, and objects within gameplay scenes.[23] Enhancements in the game design aim to significantly reduce loading times when jumping between worlds, allowing for a seamless and immersive gaming experience for the player.[24][25] Marcus Smith, Creative Director at Insomniac Games, responded in an interview with GamesRadar+ regarding the ease up of workflows due to the PS5's custom-designed SSD, stating that the "game utilizes dimensions and dimensional rifts, and that would not have been possible without the solid state drive of the PlayStation 5," further adding that it is "screamingly fast. It allows us to build worlds and project players from one place to another in near instantaneous speeds. It is an unbelievable game-changer in terms of, we can now do gameplay where you're in one world and the next moment you're in another."[26]

In an interview with Famitsu, Insomniac Games confirmed that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will feature a 4K-resolution mode running at 30 frames per second and a 60-frames-per-second "performance mode", running at a lower resolution after a game patch on launch day.[27][28][29] The game will also feature support for high dynamic range.[30] Additionally, Insomniac Games confirmed that they wanted to broaden the accessibility options for the game, including a high contrast mode and toggles for simplified traversal, camera sensitivity, flight assistance, and vice versa, to ensure that all players could enjoy the gameplay and complete the story.[31][32]

Music

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart features an original score composed primarily by Mark Mothersbaugh.[33]

Release

It will be released worldwide on June 11, 2021.[34] On February 11, 2021, Insomniac Games revealed the pre-order editions for the game.[34] The standard edition includes a graphically upgraded version of the Carbonox armor from Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, as well as the Pixelizer weapon from Ratchet & Clank (2016).[34] The digital deluxe edition contains five armor sets, a sticker pack for the new Photo Mode, 20 Raritanium used to upgrade weapons, and a digital soundtrack and artbook.[35]
